Homemade Playdough
Updated: Aug 20, 2021
Homemade Playdough is one of our favourite sensory materials to have in our classrooms. We’ve been using Rachelle Doorley’s Recipe from ‘Tinkerlab’ since we opened and have always had success with the finished product. Her website and book have wonderful resources for tinkering, crafting and creating https://tinkerlab.com/ There are also copies of her book available at the library
Ingredients
5 cups water
2.5 cups salt
3 T cream of tartar (Bulk Barn!)
10 T vegetable oil
5 cups flour
Scents: cinnamon, mint, pumpkin pie spice, ginger, lemon, rosemary, lavendar. In the summer we love to add fresh herbs from the garden to natural playdough
Prep
Mix all ingredients together in a pot. Cook the dough over low heat, mixing frequently. Keep mixing and mixing – when your muscles start to hurt it means you are doing it right! The dough will begin to look sticky, keep mixing until the edges along the sides and bottom look dry. Pinch a piece of the dough – if it’s not sticky, it’s ready. Remove from the heat and empty it out onto the counter top or cutting board. Kneed the dough until it’s smooth and then add-on whatever scent you are working with!
